My work is a visual invitation to intimacy. I work with wood for its beauty and strength, but most of all for the involvement it demands from me during the creative process. The relationship that I have with my tools, and the physical movements of carving evolves into an ongoing conversation with each piece. After a period of time there is a transitional moment when the piece speaks, and demands its own expression in the world .
True Expression
I work from the female figure for its natural beauty and the way it lends itself to true “expression”. It is my intention to reveal a new awareness, sometimes spatial , sometimes emotional, through the combination of abstract angles, edges and curves. This juxtaposition of natural and exaggerated form allows for one to question, engage and inspire an individualistic and hopefully personal reaction /and response.
Inspiration
I seek inspiration from nature and personal relationships, whether it be a chance encounter with a stranger, the sound of glistening sunlight on a wave, or the paled edges of churning stones on a rocky coast. These encounters become motivation, even tools which I use to carve that same passion into my artwork.
Beyond The Ordinary
The truth of my vision comes to life after allowing ourselves to look far enough past the obvious to notice details of the forms in each piece. It is then that I have facilitated a new awareness that extends beyond the ordinary and simple recognition. To reveal and expose the unexpected intimacies from everyday familiar, suggest contrast and reflection, and give reverence to our own inspirations , THAT is why I create.
